The door label decides it. Open the driver's door and read the Tire and Loading Information sticker on the B-pillar or door edge. It names the tire size, the load index it requires and the cold inflation pressure Ford certified for this one truck. On an unmodified F-150 that sticker outranks every table published anywhere, the one above it included.

Diameters above are computed from each size string, which turns 275/60R20 into a 33.0-inch tire instead of three numbers that mean nothing next to the 275/55R20 already on the truck. Treat them as nominal figures. Rim width and inflation shift the mounted result slightly, two tires in one printed size can land a few tenths apart, and stock levels in any given fitment move around during the year.

Tight tread blocks, long treadwear coverage and low noise at 70 mph. Wet braking gets more engineering attention here than loose-surface bite does. An F-150 that covers 18,000 paved miles a year and meets gravel twice a summer costs the least per mile on this category, and it keeps the ride closest to how the truck felt new.

One rung past a standard all-terrain
Hybrid and rugged terrain
Wider voids and chunkier shoulder blocks than a standard A/T, with the tread pitch varied and ejectors built in so highway noise and trapped gravel stay manageable. It earns its price on a lifted truck moving between pavement and rock most weeks. The extra weight and rolling resistance turn up on the fuel gauge regardless of whether the capability gets used.
Only when the ground demands it
Mud terrain
Nothing clears thick mud and wet clay like a true M/T, because the voids between blocks are wide enough for the material to fling out instead of packing solid. The bill arrives as noise, rotating mass and slower steering response on pavement. Buying one for looks is a legitimate choice, but it is a choice that gets paid for on every commute.
Where the road stays frozen for months
Winter and severe snow
M+S and the three-peak mountain snowflake are not the same marking. 3PMSF means the tire passed a measured snow-traction test; M+S describes tread geometry and requires no such test. Winter compounds stay pliable below roughly 45°F, which is the part four-wheel drive cannot help with. Ford builds a truck that pulls away from a stop. Stopping and steering on ice belong entirely to the tire.
Buy the least aggressive tire that still handles your hardest regular surface
The most capable tire on the shelf is easy to identify. The right one takes an honest count of how many days a year the truck leaves pavement. A 4x4 covering 90 percent of its mileage on the interstate gets more out of controlled noise, short wet stopping distances and a 65,000-mile warranty than out of tread voids it uses twice a season. Move up a category when the ground genuinely calls for it, and accept that noise, mass and rolling resistance show up the same afternoon the tires go on.

Three-ply polyester under a heavy steel belt package holds the whole thing together. An F-150 that rarely leaves asphalt is better served by almost anything listed above.

An LT or flotation size often gets 10,000 to 20,000 fewer warranted miles than the metric version sitting beside it in the same product line. Compare the exact size, never the model.
What Ford F-150 Tires Cost
Expect roughly $170 to $250 per tire in the common factory sizes, meaning 245/70R17, 265/60R18 and 275/55R20. Premium all-terrains and LT casings run $250 to $350. Large flotation sizes and mud-terrains for a lifted truck pass $400 each without difficulty, and 22-inch fitments carry their own premium because the market for them is smaller.
A realistic set of four therefore lands between about $700 for a mainstream highway tire in a factory size and well past $1,700 for 37X12.50R17 rubber, before anything gets mounted.
Fitting costs money too, and the price scales with the tire. Mount, balance, valve hardware, a TPMS service kit and disposal of the old set all land on the invoice. A shop charges more to wrestle a Load Range E casing onto a 20-inch wheel than a standard-load 17.
Cheapest per tire and cheapest per mile are rarely the same purchase. A truck putting 20,000 paved miles behind it every year recovers the price gap on a 70,000-mile warranty inside one set. A truck that works gravel lots should ignore the mileage figure and buy the tougher sidewall, because a puncture costs a day of work before it costs a tire.
What moves the number
- Overall diameter. A 37 costs several times a 31 in any line offering both.
- Wheel diameter. One tread pattern lists higher in a 22-inch size than in an 18.
- Casing. Standard load up to LT is its own step on the invoice.
- Tread category, running from highway at the bottom up to mud-terrain.
- Load index and load range inside a single nominal size.
- Shop labor: mount, balance, TPMS service, new valves, old-tire disposal.
Running 33s, 35s and 37s on an F-150
Sticking with the size Ford fitted is the low-risk path, since steering calibration, gearing, fender clearance, speedometer accuracy and the spare under the bed all stay where the factory set them. Going taller buys ground clearance, more rubber on the ground once aired down, and the stance most F-150 builds are chasing. The bill for that arrives in four separate places.
A taller tire raises the effective gearing
Taller tires hand the axle a longer lever to push against, so the truck feels slower off the line and the transmission starts hunting for gears it used to hold. Towing notices first. On builds that need low-speed control or trailer performance back, regearing the differentials moves from optional to worth pricing.
Braking has more mass to stop
A pound at the rim costs far more to stop than a pound in the bed, and a Load Range E casing in a larger size adds plenty of both. Stopping distances stretch accordingly. A leveled truck on 35s also carries its weight higher than the F-150 that Ford crash-tested, and no tread compound gives that back.
Fuel economy usually moves the wrong way
Larger frontal area, more mass to spin up and open tread blocks each cost something at the pump. Owners tend to price an upsize as a cosmetic decision and then get blindsided by a two-mpg drop, which almost always came from the diameter and the weight rather than from the tread compound that gets blamed for it.
Clearance gets checked at full lock and full compression
Bolting up is not fitting. Big sizes find the fender liner, the radius arm and the body mount, and whatever gap is visible with the truck parked shrinks to nothing once the wheel turns to the stop or the suspension compresses over a driveway apron. Offset relocates the problem rather than solving it, since pushing the tire outboard opens room at the frame and closes it at the fender lip.
The speedometer starts reading low
One wheel revolution covers more ground on a taller tire, and the truck has no way to know that until somebody recalibrates it. Go up 4 percent in diameter and an indicated 65 mph is closer to 68. The odometer under-counts by the same margin, stretching every mileage-based service interval and quietly understating the miles on a truck that later goes up for sale.
33-inch tires
A “33” names a bracket, not a measurement. Tires sold under that label calculate out anywhere from about 32.5 to 33.5 inches, which means two of them can sit a full inch apart in height and differ visibly in width.
On most half-ton F-150s this is the first jump that works without cutting anything, usually with a leveling kit and some care over wheel offset. The Tremor already runs a 33-class all-terrain from the factory at 275/70R18, so the diameter itself is not the obstacle. The setup around it is.
35-inch tires
Thirty-fives are a build rather than a purchase. Sizes such as 35X12.50R18 are stocked everywhere, and availability has never once proven fitment. Suspension work, careful offset selection, an alignment and some trimming are all routine parts of getting there on a non-Raptor F-150.
The gearing penalty runs deep enough that differential gears become worth pricing on any truck that tows or needs control at crawling speed. Budget the whole setup at once. Diameter is one line on that list and rarely the expensive one.
37-inch tires and the Raptor
The Raptor arrives on LT315/70R17, or 37X12.50R17 with the 37 package. Both use a 17-inch wheel, and the pairing of a large tire with a small rim is deliberate: less wheel leaves more sidewall between the rim and the rock.
Those two packages are not interchangeable just because the wheels match. Diameter, load rating, available clearance and the suspension calibration differ. Replacing Raptor rubber means preserving more than the look, and a 37 on a standard F-150 is a fabrication project.
Load Range, Pressure, Towing and Replacement
Read 275/60R20 from left to right
The first number, 275, is how wide the tire measures across the tread in millimeters. The 60 is a ratio rather than a measurement: the sidewall stands 60 percent as tall as the tire is wide, so a wider tire at the same ratio also gains sidewall height. R marks it as radial, which every modern truck tire is. The 20 is the rim it mounts to. All four values change how the truck drives.
Matching the rim size is not matching the tire
A 275/55R20 and a 275/60R20 both bolt to a 20-inch wheel and differ by more than an inch of overall height. That gap is enough to alter speedometer readings, fender clearance and the way the truck sits. Older F-150s used the 55-series where current trucks use the 60-series, so a size pulled from a newer truck is not automatically a replacement.
Flotation sizes count in inches instead
Read 37X12.50R17 as about 37 inches of height and 12.5 of width, wrapped around a 17-inch rim. Ford writes the Raptor 37 package this way and uses the metric format everywhere else, though both describe ordinary radial truck tires. All three figures are approximate. A tire grows or narrows depending on how wide the rim underneath happens to be.
P-metric, metric and LT are not interchangeable
A 265/70R18 and an LT265/70R18 mount to the same rim and measure within a fraction of an inch of one another. The LT is engineered for heavier loads and rougher service, which also means more rotating mass, a firmer ride and different inflation targets. Ford puts LT rubber on the FX4 off-road package and the Raptor because those trucks need it. A street-driven F-150 usually does not.
One letter describes the casing, one number describes the load
Load range is a letter describing how the casing is built and what pressure it tolerates. Load index is a number stating what one tire can carry at its rated pressure. Both are printed on the sidewall and neither is optional on a replacement, because an F-150 certified around a given load index does not become safe with less just because the diameter matched. Bed racks, tool boxes, slide-in campers and trailer tongue weight all push against that figure.
A stronger tire does not raise the truck’s ratings
Fitting Load Range E tires leaves GVWR, payload and axle limits exactly where they were. Those numbers come from the chassis, brakes, suspension and axles, and a sidewall cannot re-engineer any of them. Extra tire capacity is useful headroom for durability and heat. It is not a license to load the truck past its door-jamb figures.
Use the door-label pressure, not the sidewall maximum
The Tire and Loading Information label on the driver-side B-pillar or door edge gives the cold pressure Ford certified for this exact truck. Sidewall figures describe what a tire can hold, which is a different question from what a truck wants, and a Load Range E casing will happily accept pressures that make an empty F-150 ride like a shopping cart. Check before driving. A warm tire reads several psi high, and bleeding that air out leaves it underinflated once it cools.
Towing math starts at payload, not at tire stiffness
Trailer tongue weight sits on the truck and comes straight out of its payload, so passengers, cargo and accessories all belong in the arithmetic before anyone worries about casing stiffness. A properly rated highway or all-terrain tire tows perfectly well. The most aggressive tread on the shelf adds heat, noise and rolling resistance to a job that pays back none of it.
TPMS has to work when the job is finished
Every F-150 from 2008 onward carries tire pressure monitoring, and the warning light only appears once a tire is already significantly low. That makes it a backstop, not a substitute for a monthly gauge check. New wheels and sensors need to be compatible with the truck and relearned properly. A light that flashes instead of holding steady points at the monitoring system itself rather than at low pressure.
Rotate on schedule and fix alignment instead of symptoms
Roughly 5,000 to 8,000 miles is the usual rotation window, with the exact interval and pattern set by the truck and the tire design. Directional tires and staggered setups need different handling. Pickups punish neglect here because front and rear axles carry very different loads, and a bed that is empty on Monday and loaded on Friday changes the picture again. Cupping, feathering or one worn shoulder is a diagnosis, not a rotation.
Replace before the legal minimum when conditions demand it
2/32 inch is where a tire is legally worn out. Wet braking distances start growing well before that, and around 4/32 inch is a sensible replacement point for a truck that sees heavy rain. Snow traction fades earlier still, closer to 5/32 inch. A truck wintering in Michigan and one living in Phoenix reach their practical replacement point at different tread depths on identical tires.
Tires age out even with tread left
A tire stamped 2324 came out of the mold in week 23 of 2024, which is what the final four digits of the DOT code encode. Rubber changes with heat, sunlight and time whether the truck moves or not, and six to ten years is the window most manufacturers name. Look at the full-size spare while you are under there. It has hung below the bed since the truck was new and it still looks perfect.
Four-wheel drive adds one more constraint: all four tires need to roll at close to the same rate. A brand new tire is measurably larger around than a half-worn one wearing the same printed size, so dropping a single replacement in beside three tired ones builds a permanent mismatch into the driveline. Once the set is well down, doing all four at once is simpler and usually cheaper than managing that difference.
